Yo, Guys! How is it going? I hope you are doing well. Actually, I am not doing well for quite a while. Apart from having a terrible sore throat since one week, anxious and gloomy thoughts about the upcoming exams often come into my mind. These constantly recurring thoughts are capable of influencing my feelings and therefore causing a bad mood. All kinds of deductions race then through my mind: I have to take so many exams within a short period of time! OMG! I have to study a lot but I don’t know where to start! I am running out of time! Ok, ok… calm down Amina! Worse things happen at sea! But… no! I overtaxed myself! I am in over my head! And now, the famous yell, often used in hollywood:
Ok, ok… maybe this was a bit over the top. Nevertheless, I am nervous about the exams and I believe that you guys understand it, since you are in the same situation.
This kind of anxiety is a problem which can be our undoing. So, what are we going to do, if we have got a problem? Yes, of course: We are trying to find a solution for it and, at this point, I finally come to the actual thing:
Yesterday, I was on ted.com again and I came upon a video. - For those who do not know what TED.com is: It is a website which features a wide range of informative videos on different topics. Scientists, scholars, but also people with any kind of professions, talk about special ideas, projects and their results. They engaged in scientific, cultural and phenomenal subjects. On the TED conference they finally present their subject area. It is so interesting, instructive and many of the speakers are even funny. I like that! - Back to the particular video, I want to talk about: As I said, I came upon a TED video by chance:
Finally, I think Carol Dweck is absolutely right. Although she is talking about younger pupils in this case, I think her theory applies to all of us. We should not run away from difficulty but accept the challenge. Furthermore, thinking too much about our problems harms our well-being. Instead of despairing, we should just act! If we keep on practising, we will gain our laurels in future. Even if we fail on the upcoming exams, it does not mean that we are incompetent and stupid. It only means that we have NOT YET succeeded! :) Besides, I think Mrs. Dweck is a delightful old woman, probably the lovely grandmother I never had. :D
She definitely made my day and I hope that the message of the video encourages you too!
That’s it. See you soon! :)
